LONDRINA RESEARCHER RECEIVES ABPA APPLICABLE RESEARCH PRIZE
The veterinarian and researcher at the State University of Londrina (UEL), Raquel Arruda Leme, was the winner of the 2017 edition of the ABPA Award for Research Applicable, an initiative of the Brazilian Association of Animal Proteins (ABPA) to encourage research aimed at the applicability of the agroindustrial sector.
The researcher won the award with the study “Development of a diagnostic platform for identification and monitoring of a previously exotic infection in Brazilian pigs: advances in studies on Senecavirus A”. The research describes the direction of the efforts of a multiuser animal health laboratory to elucidate an exotic vesicular infection that spread among Brazilian pig herds in 2015. The study also includes a serological investigation related to the virus during the last decade.
In its objectives, the work of the veterinarian emphasizes the importance of the constant monitoring of exotic diseases that can impact the pig production of Brazil, emphasizing sanity as one of the most important patrimony of the Brazilian swine industry.
“The scientific work presented underscores the importance of constant and effective monitoring of exotic diseases that may compromise Brazilian herds and highlights the importance of a network of laboratories capable of rapidly identifying endemic, epidemic, emerging, reemerging and exotic microorganisms in the country. The work was developed by a team of professionals who work in an integrated way in the Multiuser Laboratory in Animal Health of UEL. Therefore, this Award is not only mine, but of all who contributed to the construction of this study, especially our advisor, Prof. Dr. Amauri Alfieri, “stresses Raquel.
The award was presented on August 31, the last day of the International Salon of Poultry and Swine Industry (SIAVS), held at Anhembi Park, in São Paulo (SP). As a winner at the scientific awards, Raquel will be invited to accompany ABPA at one of her international missions at global food fairs.
“I am very grateful for the work done by ABPA as a representative of the poultry and pig sectors in the country in favor of strengthening the two segments and promoting the quality, sanity and sustainability of the products of the two production chains. With this, it is very difficult to find the right words to express how significant it is and therefore how grateful we are to receive the Prize. This award represents, in fact, ABPA’s recognition of the importance and applicability of our research, which is truly an honor. I congratulate ABPA on valuing academic research, especially on those that have applicability to sectors. Initiatives like these are very important to stimulate the development of research and the popularization of science, “says the researcher.
